The small summer wine guide

You don't need to be a sommelier to choose the right wine!

Who wouldn't enjoy a glass of cold fröccs (spritzer) on a sunny early June evening? But sometimes you might be in the mood for a better-quality wine with your dinner. Or maybe you want to give some away as a gift. Whatever the occasion, choosing the right wine can make all the difference to the desired outcome. But despite the mystery surrounding the wine world, you don't need to be a sommelier to do this. You just need to consider a few things. After that, pop into Bortársaság in the marketplace of Hegyvidék Shopping Mall, where the expert staff will be on hand with more tips and tasty offers!

Small fröccs, large fröccs – kings of the patio

Every wine has its place, even when diluted. Although even the Romans realized that it was worth taking a little of the edge off your wine in the scorching sunshine, the concept of the modern-day fröccs goes back to the great Ányos Jedlik, who has opened a new chapter in the history of wine with his sparkling soda water. The name comes from none other than Mihály Vörösmarty, who spiced his wine with Jedlik's soda water and then told the inventor to call it "fröccs". He found “spritzer" too German.

But what do you need to look out for? When making a fröccs, use a lively, juicy white or rosé wine, such as the Welschriesling or the Blue Frankish rosé, and pay attention to the temperature: a wine and soda at 5-7 degrees will make the best fröccs. It's a good idea to use a glass instead of a plastic cup to enhance the flavors.

From Bortársaság's selection, we recommend the Béla and Bandi winery's Pinot Gris 2020 citric dry white wine, and rosé lovers should try the Etyek Kúria Rosé 2020!

A light summer afternoon?

If we're talking about a cocktail party or a casual garden get-together, it's worth capturing the lightness of the occasion. Go for a fresh, fruity red wine or a light rosé, as this is not the place for seriousness and heavy dinners.

If we're talking about specific wines, it's worth trying Kristinus winery's Blue Franc Sillere 2020, but the light red Tricollis Red 2020 from Pannonhalma Abbey is also a great choice.

Or a rendezvous?

The story is similar on a rendezvous. With the addition that we should always take into account the wine preferences of the person sitting across the table. It's not a good idea to order a full-bodied red wine if your partner is a light white wine drinker, so order with care. As a general rule, start with lighter wines, and only then move on to the fuller ones if you like.

The whole situation can be somewhat avoided with a good champagne, of course! The Brut in Bortársaság’s selection is from Sauska and is a great, light choice for a date. If wine is your thing, we recommend Matua Winery's Sauvignon Blanc 2020.

For formal evenings

Of course, we can't forget the importance of a full-bodied red wine, no matter how light-hearted the summer finds us. For example, if you're invited to a conversation, a serious event or even a formal evening, feel free to lift a full-bodied red off the shelf.

For example, the Grand Superior 2017 version of Nagy-Eged Bull’s Blood from St. Andrea winery or Ruppert's Cabarnet Sauvignon, also from the year 2017.

To give away as a present

A gift of wine will really hit the spot if it is chosen with the personality of the recipient in mind. Where you feel refreshment and fresh energy, feel free to immerse yourself in a world of equally lush, fruity reds or light whites and rosés. And for a more serious personality, consider a red wine with a matching gourmet finish.

Just a tip: Chateau D'esclans' Whispering Angel Rosé 2020 is a light rosé that can enchant anyone!
